Get excited, you might be able to try Google’s Project Jump

gopro_16_cam_360_array_io15

For those of you unaware Google’s Project Jump is a camera rig that features 16 GoPro cameras setup perfectly to film video for virtual reality. The way it works is you place the rig onto a tripod or camera poll and all the cameras film at once capturing a 360-degree of your surroundings. Once you get back to your computer, you can use their software to stitch all the clips together to create one seamless video that can be viewed using virtual reality glasses such as Google Cardboard or on YouTube.

Google aims to make virtual reality mainstream and the only way to do that is by making the videos and way to watch them cheaper and easier for the consumers. Currently Project Jump is not available to buy just yet, but for a lucky few you might be able to try it. Google has opened a Project Jump application where anyone can fill out the sheet with basic information and give a brief explanation as to why you would be the perfect person to test it out. Obviously the most important part of the form is the explanation of what you plan on filming with them. Google will give priority to “awesome” responses.

Good luck to those of you who apply and we would love to talk to you if you get in.

International Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge variants begin receiving Android 5.1.1

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Back_TA

It looks like Android 5.1.1 is going to be hitting various international Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, variants, according to a report from French publication Planete Galaxy and SamMobile.

galaxy-s6-android-5-1-1-screenshot

According to Planete Galaxy, Android 5.1.1 is actually already rolling out to the Galaxy S6 (SM-G920F) in the French market. The online publication shows that the update is only 623MB in size, which is expected since 5.1.1 isn’t much of a major release, but more for bug fixes and performance improvements. The update fixes a lot of minor nuisances, such as being able to alphabetically organize apps in the app drawer. Planete Galaxy noted there were some other changes, such as being able to remove a few S features from the notification shade, too.

Better news comes way of SamMobile, who mentions that the update is available through Samsung Kies for the Galaxy S6 Edge (SM-G925F). The Samsung publication earlier reported that T-Mobile could be bringing Android 5.1.1 to the Samsung Galaxy S5, and is already available by way of Samsung Kies.

In other words, Android 5.1.1 should be available for most international variants of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge soon. It wouldn’t be surprising if we began hearing something more official directly from Samsung soon, followed by an OTA update.

As per the norm, you can check for the update manually in Settings > About Phone. If you have the update or have installed it ready, be sure to sound off in the comments!

Android M developer preview now available for 12 Sony Xperia devices

Sony-Xperia-Z3-Tablet-Compact-7

Unless you own a Nexus 5, 6, 9 or Player, you most likely haven’t been able to try out the new Android M developer preview that was just recently announced. However, if you own a somewhat recent Xperia device, you’ll now have the opportunity to test out the preview software for yourself. Sony has just released a new Android M dev preview build for 12 various Xperia devices as part of the company’s Open Device program.

The list of supported devices includes the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia E3, Xperia M2, Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia T3. Much like flashing Android M on a Nexus device, this process seems to be pretty simple. All of the necessary instructions and files are available on Sony’s website and through the company’s easy-to-follow guide.

Just remember that while flashing the most recent build of Android may be enticing, this is intended for developer use and not necessarily for for use on one’s daily driver. This build is only available for devices with unlocked bootloaders. Sony also notes that the modem and camera have not been implemented for this version of the preview.

If you’re interested in checking it out, Sony has released a short video with the M preview running on an Xperia Z3:

[Deal] Google’s Nexus Player only $68 through Amazon

Nexus Player – Google11

Amazon has Google’s Nexus Player on sale for $ 68, if you’re looking to get yourself set up with an Android TV.

Of course, there are much better options out there as far as Android TV set-top boxes go. For instance, the NVIDIA Shield TV and Forge TV are excellent solutions, but can be a lot pricier than what the Nexus Player is running for right now.

The Nexus Player usually runs at about $ 100, but at $ 68, you’re getting about a $ 32 discount, and that’s hard to pass up. If you’re looking to outfit your TV with Android on a budget, this is your best bet.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition surfaces on GeekBench

The Value Edition of the popular budget device, the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, had surfaced a few weeks ago. And now the handset, which is powered by a Spreadtrum chipset, has appeared on benchmark app, GeekBench.

Before getting into how it fared against the Galaxy Grand Prime on the benchmark test, let’s find out what makes the Value Edition different from its regular variant. Well, it runs Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box instead of Android 4.4 KitKat. And it is powered by a quad core Spreadtrum SC8830 SoC based on Cortex-A7, while the regular version sports Snapdragon 410 processor.

According to a GSMArena user’s tip, the CPU of the handset – Codenamed SGGPVE – is clocked at 1.3 GHz. Paired with 1GB of RAM, the processor doesn’t measure up to the performance of the regular Galaxy Grand Prime (Check the result below). Don’t let the slightly worse performance disappoint you, as the handset could be priced slightly cheaper as well.

Motorola begins Android 5.1.1 deployment of Moto X (1st Gen)

Moto_G_2014_2nd_Gen_Back_Slanted_Camera_Lens_Motorola_Logo_TA

Motorola began soak testing the Moto X (1st Gen) Android 5.1.1 in multiple markets last week. On Friday, it began full deployment for unlocked models of the 1st gen in the US, Brazil, and on Canadian carrier Rogers.

David Schuster, a Senior Director at Motorola, took to Google Plus on Friday to announce the deployment:

I am pleased to announce that we have started full deployment of the 5.1 Android Lollipop upgrade for Moto X (1st Gen) for US Retail, Brazil Retail and Rogers in Canada.

Moto X (1st Gen) users have been waiting for the update for some time now, raising concerns that Motorola wasn’t living up to its promise of quick updates. And that still might be a concern, considering that the update hasn’t made its way to users who bought the device on-contract.

Hopefully now that full deployment has begun it shouldn’t be too long before it begins hitting carriers. In the meantime, if you own an unlocked Moto X (1st Gen) you should be able to manually check for the update in Settings > About Phone.

Be sure to check out the full changelog at the source link below. Has anyone received the update yet?

Android 5.1.1 Lollipop making its way to international Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge variants

Samsung-Galaxy-S6-Edge-9

We’ve already seen the update to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop roll out to the T-Mobile Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, and now it’s looking like a few other variants are beginning to receive the update. According to French technology website Planete Galaxy, the update to Android 5.1.1 has started rolling out to the Galaxy S6 (SM-G920F) in France.

Android 5.1.1 comes in at around 623MB, which isn’t surprising considering that the update contains mostly bug fixes and performance improvements. While the changelog doesn’t list all of the changes specifically, users will now be able to remove both the S Finder and Quick Connect buttons from the notification shade after the update. To do so, simply pull down the notification shade, tap on the “Edit” button, uncheck the S Finder and Quick Connect options at the bottom, then click “Done”. Additionally, users can now rearrange apps in the app drawer alphabetically, which was oddly missing from the Galaxy S6.

Galaxy S6 5.1.1 AA

Galaxy S6 owners in France aren’t the only ones that have access to the update, though. According to SamMobile, the update to Android 5.1.1 is now available through Kies for the international Galaxy S6 Edge (SM-G925F). Although an official OTA hasn’t been spotted yet, we can expect it to begin hitting devices sometime very soon.

If you’d like to check for the update manually, head to Settings>About device>Software updates>Check now. If you happen receive the update on either of these devices, be sure to let us know in the comments below!

Sony releases Android M AOSP Developer Preview images

android-m-sony-dev-preview-aosp

Sony has just released the Android M AOSP Developer Preview images for many of its Xperia smartphones and tablets. Originally, the Developer Preview was exclusively available on the Nexus 5, 6, and 9.

Keep in mind that the Android M AOSP Developer Preview are AOSP images, so you won’t be getting exactly a pure stock Android experience, as many of the Google apps and services will be missing. If you absolutely want them, there’s always the option of retrieving them after flashing Android M. Either way, you still get all of the excellent flavours Android M is bringing to smartphones and tablets.

The eligible devices are as follows:

  • Sony Xperia Z3

  • Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

  • Sony Xperia Z2

  • Sony Xperia Z1

  • Sony Xperia Z Ultra

  • Sony Xperia Z

  • Sony Xperia ZL

  • Sony Xperia E3

  • Sony Xperia M2

  • Sony Xperia T2 Ultra

  • Sony Xperia T3

  • Sony Xperia L

  • Sony Xperia S

  • Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact

  • Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet

  • Sony Xperia Tablet Z

These devices are all a part of the Open Device program.

Another thing to watch out for is that this Developer Preview is by no means ready to be a daily driver. Sony warns that “the modem and the camera are not implemented.” Either way, if you’re ready to take Android M for a spin on something other than the Nexus lineup, hit the source link below.

Hopefully we’ll begin to see other manufactures offer something like this, although I’m not too hopeful. Then again, LG might, considering that they’ve recently started supporting developers via its bootloader program.

T-Mobile could be bringing Android 5.1.1 to the Galaxy S5 soon

Google_Play_Music_Galaxy_S_5_TA

T-Mobile could be rolling out Android 5.1.1 for the Samsung Galaxy S5 soon, according to a recent leak. There’s been no official announcement, but firmware details, touting a build date of June 10, is showing Android 5.1.1 running on T-Mobile’s Galaxy S5.

Since there’s no official announcement yet, we’re not sure what T-Mobile plans on including in the update, but like most carriers have done in the past, it will probably comes with improved notifications and Factory Reset Protection. As per the norm, there should be some performance updates and possibly support for RAW photos.

SamMobile says the update should be rolling out today and over the coming few days. If so, it shouldn’t be long before we hear something more official from T-Mobile.

If you’re in a rush to get Android 5.1.1, SamMobile has the downloadable firmware available on its website. Additionally, there’s the option of retrieving the update through Samsung Kies.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active review: Repackaged with a beefier build for a reason

samsung_galaxy_s6_att_front_water_TA

Everyone loves to praise phones with premium materials such as metal and glass. The only problem with them is durability. Drop a phone with glass and it is practically guaranteed to shatter. Drop a phone with metal and it is going to get nicked and scratched. There is a large group of consumers ranging from construction workers to overall clumsy people that require phones capable of handling drops, spills, and even dust storms. This summer, Samsung and AT&T have worked together yet again to release the Galaxy S6 Active. The phone stays true to the regular, flagship Galaxy S6. Both phones have the same stunning display, speedy processor, and large camera sensor. Really, it’s all the same! So what’s different here? The Galaxy S6 Active’s design will brace it for impact and handle itself in just about any risky situation.

Note: This review will primarily cover the areas that differ from the Galaxy S6.

Design

Preventing the phone from shattering and malfunctioning in extreme conditions is a design completely different than the metal and glass used with the Galaxy S6. The two aforementioned materials have been swapped out for plastic. Samsung had to use plastic, its former go-to material, for the entire casing of the phone because of how it manages falls; however, the plastic here does not look or even feel cheap like ones released by Samsung in the past. The right side of the Galaxy S6 Active shows the power button and houses the SIM card tray. The left side, in addition to the volume rocker, has a special Active key button to showcase what the phone is all about. Pressing the button once activates Samsung’s Activity Zone to assist with any outdoor excursion. Upon a long-press, this button acts as a shortcut to any app installed on the phone. The Activity key should be something all phone manufacturers consider because of how useful it is to have a quick shortcut to any app.

samsung_galaxy_s6_active_att_rear_angled_TA

samsung_galaxy_S6_att_top_TA

samsung_galaxy_s6_active_att_bottom_TA

The button setup on the front of the Galaxy S6 Active is familiar yet slightly different. Samsung placed three physical buttons — Recents, Home, Back — below the display. None of the buttons on the phone are loose. Each has firm placement and a generous ‘click’.

samsung_galaxy_s6_active_att_activity_zone_tiles_milk_music_TA

AT&T has three color options available: Grey, Camo White, and Camo Blue. The latter two, as their names suggest, feature camouflage patters on the rear. The same spot feels subtly textured and assists in gripping the Galaxy S6 Active. All buttons on the Galaxy S6 Active are textured, too. And along with the sides having multiple indentations, it will be very difficult to accidentally drop the Galaxy S6 Active out of your hand.

samsung_galaxy_s6_active_att_water_bowl_TA

The durable design comes with the certification to prove it. The Galaxy S6 Active’s casing is IP68 certified, meaning that the phone is water resistant, shock resistant, and dust proof. The Galaxy S6 Active can survive in up to 1.5 meters of water for around thirty minutes. You may find it hard to believe that the Galaxy S6 Active can withstand being dunked in water despite having a few openings. Well, Samsung coated the openings to keep them safe. Water will not enter through the micro-USB charging port and audio jack. I put the Galaxy S6 Active in both a small bowl of water as well as a sink with some depth and the phone functioned properly both while being submerged and after.

The Galaxy S6 Active measures 146.8 x 73.4 x 8.6mm and weighs 150g, making it bigger and heavier than its sleek and slender sibling. The Galaxy S6, by comparison, measures 143.4 x 70.5 x 6.8mm and weighs 138g. The cause for those figures increasing with the Galaxy S6 Active is the IP68 certification requiring better security and the battery’s size.

Although plastic has nothing on metal and glass, the Galaxy S6 Active feels comfortable to hold. The indentations and texture in different areas of the phone work together very well.

Hardware

samsung_galaxy_s6_active_att_top_camera_TA

The Galaxy S6 Active features a 5.1-inch Quad HD (2560×144) Super AMOLED display (576 ppi), Exynos 7420 processor, Mali-T760, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, 16MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, 3500mAh battery (non-removable, wireless charging supported), WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, and Bluetooth 4.1.

Being that this phone is available exclusively through AT&T, the Galaxy S6 Active operates on their GSM, HSPA, and LTE networks. People looking for an unlocked phone with identical specifications will have to revert back to the regular Galaxy S6.

Battery

samsung_galaxy_s6_active_time_battery_etc

With high resolution displays and a ton of horsepower running the show, battery life can become strained. Samsung, thankfully, raised the size of the battery within the Galaxy S6 Active. Rather than being a meager 2550mAh like the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 Active has a massive 3500mAh battery. The Galaxy S6 Active leaves behind the regular version as usage time spills into two days. I generally use my phone for messaging, tweeting, email, and the occasional light mobile game. People have complained that the Galaxy S6’s battery life is disappointing but the same cannot be said for the Galaxy S6 Active. It goes and goes… and goes.

Oh, the Galaxy S6 Active also supports wireless charging.

Software

The software present on the Galaxy S6 Active is the same installment of TouchWiz that the company used with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. If you have used either one of those two phones, nothing will surprise you about the Galaxy S6 Active. All of them have the latest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface. Here, it is based on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop while the other two phones are starting to see Android 5.1 already. AT&T has yet to say if and/or when the Galaxy S6 Active will get the same software update.

TouchWiz seemingly no longer slows down Samsung’s phones and the Exynos 7420 probably helps with that. Moving through the user interface is smooth and consistent, never does the phone resemble a sleuth. The camera also starts snapping photographs almost instantaneously.

samsung_galaxy_s6_active_att_activity_zone_tiles_TA

Samsung and AT&T are really pushing the outdoor capabilities of the phone and that is the reason a special hub known as Activity Zone. Launching Activity Zone can be done through the dedicated Active key button or tapping the app icon. Activity Zone displays various tiles: Weather, Barometer, S Health, Flashlight, Compass, Stopwatch, and Milk Music. The tiles can be extremely useful in different situations and most are shortcuts to another app when selected. The tile that stands out here is Milk Music. Activity Zone asks you to select among walking, running, yoga, lifting, and dancing before songs start playing.

Expect plenty of pre-installed software that does not belong to Samsung. There are around twenty apps on this phone that come from either AT&T or another company that is not its manufacturer.

Closing

samsung_galaxy_s6_active_att_front_water_top_TA

The Galaxy S6 Active costs $ 694 without a commitment of any type and that number drops to $ 199 when signing a two-year contract with AT&T. The carrier also has its AT&T Next payment plan to split the cost of the Galaxy S6 Active across twelve, eighteen, or twenty-four months. Surprisingly, the off-contract price is higher, albeit by $ 10, than the Galaxy S6. A design targeted at those needing something durable but uses cheaper materials requires a few more dollars. That seems confusing but maybe there is a need this phone. Some people are drooling over the massive battery, which could also be enough to buy the Galaxy S6 Active, and they should because it bests the top phones on the market today. But is that good enough to buy the Galaxy S6 Active over the Galaxy S6? Probably not, unless you tend to break your phones (and don’t have insurance) or work in an environment where anything can happen. Then it’s a perfect match.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 edge expected to sell 45 million units in 2015

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Edge_Front_Top_Samsung_Logo_TA

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 edge smartphones have generally been well received, with the main complaint about the handsets being the absence of MicroSD card support and shortened battery life. While unnamed Samsung executives have previously let slip that sales of the S6 and S6 Edge handsets has met internal targets, no one has had a solid idea of how well they are actually selling.

That hasn’t really changed, Samsung has been reluctant to make sales figures public, and so we are left with analysts making informed guesses on the matter. These figures vary from one analyst to the next. A report released be Deutsche Bank intimates that Samsung are on track to sell around 45 million units combined of the S6 and S6 edge smartphones. Industry tracker, DRAMeXchange, estimates combined sales of 55 million while the Hong Kong-based researcher, Counterpoint believes the number to be around 50 million units. On the optimistic end of the scale, Yonhap had estimated sales of around 70 million units.

It’s a crap shoot really until Samsung decides to release official sales figures for the S6 and S6 edge handsets. But even if the lowest estimate of 45 million combined sales is realised, that still means that the S6 and S6 edge have managed to equal the previous chart-topper, the Galaxy S4. While it isn’t the eye-watering number of 70 million as was previously suggested, it’s still a great comeback from the Galaxy S5 that didn’t meet expectations. Let us know in the comments if you have seen many Galaxy S6 or S6 edge handsets in the wild.

Moto G 2015 to sport 13MP rear/5MP selfie cameras and just 1GB of RAM: Leak

Yeah, you heard it right – the new Motorola Moto G may not pack more than 1 GB of RAM, if the latest rumours are to be believed. On the upside, however, it could sport a 13-megapixel rear snapper and a 5-megapixel selfie camera.

Like every year, Motorola leaks and rumours have begun surfacing with the advent of summer. And the most recent of them are a series of images posted to Google+ revealing many specifications of the popular mid ranger. Going by the images, the new Moto G will feature the same 5-inch display as its predecessor along with similar minimalistic design. The only difference in the design, however, seems to be a textured back panel and a vertical strip featuring a 13-megapixel camera, LED flash an groovy Motorola logo.

The Google+ post reportedly lifted photos of the device (model number XT1543) from an unspecified Chinese forum. Separately, a YouTube video showing the prototype the handset revealed its specifications including Android 5.1.1, 5-inch screen, Snapdragon 410 processor, 13MP rear and 5MP front cameras, 1GB of RAM, 8GB on board storage expandable via a MicroSD card slot.

T-Mobile begins rolling out Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to the Galaxy S5

lg g3 vs samsung galaxy s5 aa (31 of 35)

Having recently become one of the first carriers to update its Samsung Galaxy S6 handsets to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, T-Mobile has now quickly followed up with an update for its Galaxy S5 customers.

An update with the build number G900TUVU1FOF6 has begun rolling out to S5 owners today, although the company has not yet officially announced the update or listed a change log for us to dissect.

However, we know from the previous S6 update that Android 5.1.1 includes new features such as Smart Lock factory reset, the option to remove toggles from the Notification panel, and a slight update to the Material Design elements in Samsung’s TouchWiz UI.

Samsung also introduced the Guest Mode from stock Android, a new Parallax Effect for wallpapers, and alphabetical app draw ordering with the Galaxy S6 update, so these features should hopefully carry over to the Galaxy S5 update as well. It is also likely that the new camera RAW file format and ISO adjustment options will be made available, at least when using third party camera apps.

The update is gradually rolling out over the air or can be grabbed as a manual download through Samsung’s Kies software. T-mobile seems to be ticking all of the right boxes with its fast update process.

Sony launches its range of Ultra Thin, 4K televisions with Android TV baked-in, starting from $2,499

KD-55X900C_Hero_scrfill

While 4K content might be a little thin on the ground at the moment, Ultra HD televisions with Smart services are gaining in popularity as consumers attempt to future-proof their purchases. Sony is hoping this continues to be the case, avoiding the false dawn that was 3D. Today, the Japanese company is finally launching its range of ultra thin 4K Ultra HD TV’s with Android TV baked in that first appeared back at CES in January of this year.

2015-65X900C_Bty_Hero-screenfill-4K

The two models on offer are the X900C and X910C, both of which feature 4K resolution and Android TV. Where they differ is in size, with the X900C being available in both 55- and 65-inches, and the X910C a massive 75-inches. You can see from the image above how thin the X900C and X910C Ultra HD televisions are, just .19-inch thick (5.08mm).

Other than being ultra thin and offering Triluminos displays with 4K resolution, the range of television’s other claim to fame is Android TV which brings access to content from the usual suspects. Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Pandora, SlingTV, CBS Sports and over 600 other providers are on tap, with games available to download and play on the TV. And if that isn’t enough, Android TV brings GoogleCast with it, meaning you can stream content such as HBO Go from your smartphones, tablets or computers straight to the television.

Because 4K content isn’t exactly widespread at the moment (other than Netflix and Amazon Instant Video), the televisions are able to upscale HD content to 4K quality thanks to Sony’s 4K X-Reality Pro up-scaling technology.

Finally, as you would expect from Sony, you can stream your PlayStation 3 games directly to the X900C and X910C televisions.

You are probably wondering what the damage is for Sony’s latest 4K televisions. As you might expect, you wallet is going to cry a little. Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge 2015 sales predicted at 45 million

problems-fixes-galaxy-s6-2

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are impressive flagship smartphones, but exactly how well they’ve been selling is still a contested subject. While initially expected to shift around 70 million units, early sales reports suggested that consumer adoption was slower than anticipated. The latest revised forecast for Samsung’s latest flagship predicts that it will sell around 45 million units by the end of 2015, according to the Korea Herald.

The 45 million mark is the magic number for Samsung, as this is the current record for units shipped held by its older Galaxy S4 flagship. The S5 failed to live up to the success of its predecessor and resulted in a remarkable decline in Samsung’s smartphone shipments and company profits last year. Strong sales for its Galaxy S6 would help prove to skeptics that Samsung is still capable of producing desirable high-end hardware.

Samsung galaxy s5 vs galaxy s4 aa 2

The Galaxy S4 is currently Samsung’s best selling smartphone, while the Galaxy S5 fell far short of expectations.

This latest report is the most conservative estimate that we have heard so far but other analysts are still predicting much higher numbers. Although this could be a sign that firms are beginning to reign in their expectations. Yonhap still anticipates the handset to put in a performance around the 70 million mark, while industry tracker DRAMeXchange had estimated combined sales of 55 million and Couterpoint Research puts the number at around 50 million.

The consensus seems to be that combined sales of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will surpass those of the Galaxy S4. The unique curved display of the S6 Edge is said to be one of the major driving factor in the handset’s popularity. We will just have to wait for some official figures.

Although a bit lower than some expectations, 45 million units sold would still likely be seen as a success for the Galaxy S6, especially as the Galaxy S5 missed its sales target by some 40 percent.

Do you think that Samsung’s S6 range will put the company back on top?

Sony’s amazingly thin Android TV sets to be released in July

Screen-Shot-2015-01-07-at-1.45.38-PM-710x397

If any manufacturer has stood by Google for their smart TV endeavors, we have to say it is definitely Sony. They were leading the Google TV race back in the day, and this year they have invested all their smart TV efforts on Android TV. It’s awesome to see such an important TV maker back our favorite platform, but it’s even more exciting when we see they are bringing us some of the most stunning televisions around.

Yes, we are talking about those amazingly thin 4K TV sets we checked out at CES 2015. That thing was only 4.9 mm at its thinnest point (which is pretty much most of the panel). It’s truly insane when you witness such thinness in person. Just to put it in perspective, most modern smartphones can’t get that thin. The only one I can think of that is as thin as these TVs is the Oppo R5.

x900c-sony-tv-1

We were all going nuts after learning these TV sets would arrive in May, but that month came and went with no news about these TV sets. Today we are glad to tell you we are finally learning about price and availability. Though they did miss their launch goal, Sony managed to get the X900C 4K Ultra HD TV all ready for a July 2015 release, while the X910C version will be hitting store shelves “this summer”.

The X900C will come in two iterations, with size being the only differentiation. One will measure 55 inches, while the larger one will have a 65-inch display. These will cost $ 2,499 and $ 3999, accordingly. Meanwhile the massive 75-inch X910C 4K Ultra HD TV will cost a whopping $ 5499. Retailers like Sony, Amazon and Best Buy will be the first to carry them, and pre-sales are said to begin today.

So there you have it, guys! I can almost see myself marveling over these TVs at the store, because I am not spending that much on a TV. They are pricey, but they offer one hell of an experience. Not to mention, these things are gorgeous. It will definitely take your living room to a whole other level. Are any of you buying one?

Verizon leaving LG G3 owners hanging out to dry?

2000px-Verizon_logo

When LG rolled out the Lollipop update for their then flagship smartphone, the LG G3, they staked a claim as being one of the first to get Lollipop out to their devices. We all know manufacturers will roll out an update to a small market to make claims like this. Nevertheless, it is usually a decent sign of a commitment to providing the latest version of Android for a given device even if users have to wait a bit longer for kinks to be worked out and carriers to give their blessing. At the time, as a relatively new owner of an LG G3, I was looking forward to seeing what would happen with my device. Fast forward half a year later and Verizon finally pushed out the Lollipop update. That was the beginning of the transition for my “dream” phone to a nightmare and now signs point to Verizon not doing anything to fix the problems they have wrought.

LG_G3_Back_Slanted_LG_Logo_TA

When I say the G3 was a “dream” phone, what I mean is I finally had a device that had a relatively svelte interface that did not get in the way of my use of the phone, it was snappy in operation, great battery life and really had no negatives. The closest to a problem was a propensity to get hot under heavy use. Life was good and I was looking forward to getting a couple years use out of it unless I decided to go for an early upgrade.

android_lollipop_tweet

Unfortunately, Verizon brought all of that to a screeching halt when they sent out their version of the Lollipop update. Granted, there are a few issues that seem to be inherent to how Lollipop operates that LG either couldn’t or wouldn’t find a way around, the most noticeable being changes to how the lock screen works, which has added some steps to the process of waking up the device.

If getting the device to spring to life were the only issue, I could probably write it off as an annoyance. Unfortunately, Verizon’s input into the update really messed things up beyond what LG had done. The most notorious problem is the WiFi notifications issue. A quick peek at the Verizon support communities reveals legions of users complaining about this problem. At first, users assumed the issue was just that notifications would not show up when connected to WiFi. After dealing with this for a couple months though, it appears the problem is actually that apps do not even bother to connect while on WiFi.

A good example is Gmail. Between all my accounts, I usually get a new email at least every 30 minutes all day and all night long. Yet, leaving the phone overnight or worse, sitting on my desk at work, connected to WiFi will cause Gmail to not even check for anything until I switch to the carrier network (and use up valuable data) or force the app to check for mail. So it is goodbye to the days when the phone worked for me and would let me know when I had to pay attention to something like an incoming email.

LG_G3_Back_Cover_Removed_TA

Other problems are now present, mostly subjective, but it does not appear I am alone. Apps load slowly, screen refreshes and redraws are slow, and recently the notifications bar has stopped loading unless I go through the extra step of swiping down from the top of the screen. Considering the hardware packed into the device, none of these problems should be present.

Another problem is the return of the hypersensitive touchscreen, a problem that LG fixed shortly after the initial release of the G3. This particular problem is why I am unable to use knock codes as the screen keeps registering “knocks” when the phone is in my pocket, turning on the screen unnecessarily. Overall I am routinely having to reset the device or shutdown apps running wild, steps I rarely took when still on KitKat.

verizon_lg_g3_missing_bar

Having about reached the end of my rope with the problems, and missing some time-sensitive emails until it was far too late to matter, I decided to reach out to Verizon about a solution to the problems. Of course, this meant dealing with support protocols like doing device factory resets, steps I had already taken. Once we dispensed with those, Verizon support indicated to me that they are “working hard to resolve these issues” which seems to imply that they know there is a problem with Lollipop on LG G3 devices. Unfortunately, they also indicate “No ETA currently.” Considering LG appears to be skipping Lollipop 5.1 and will hold out for Android M for the next major update on the G3, I suspect no fix is in the works.

verizon_lg_g3_support_01

My next step was to inquire as to whether I could trade-in my device for a different phone since the carrier is the source of the problems. It seems only fair to me that they should stand behind their updates. Unfortunately, despite recognizing that I no longer have a functional phone, Verizon support told me there is no way to trade for another model.

I did ask them whether my only option was to pursue a breach of contract, to which they replied they may be willing to pursue a warranty replacement or I could wait to see if LG issues a patch, a response that sounds like they are passing the buck.

verizon_lg_g3_support_02

My next step is to try a local Verizon retail store to see if the sales side of the house may have a little more flexibility in trying to keep a customer, much less keep one happy.

Any other Verizon LG G3 owners out there that have pursued a device replacement?

About Opera Max

unnamed-6Opera Max combines the functionality of a virtual private network with data compression. Put simply, the service routes your Internet traffic through Opera’s servers, and serves you a compressed version, resulting in smaller data bills and faster loading times.

The latest version of Opera Max (1.0.225) includes WiFi data compression. Previously, Opera Max only worked over cellular connections, but there are times when you can benefit from data connection even if you’re using WiFi – for instance, in a crowded airport or on a stadium. Switching compression on in these cases should give you a faster browsing experience.

Opera Max works with browsers, but also with any app that receives data over an unencrypted connection. The new version adds an app management component, allowing you to see which apps eat up a lot of data or battery.
